Delightfully Rich Hot Chocolate L’Orange (Or Mocha!)

Hot chocolate. Or mochas. Yes, yes please. I love the process of heating up a little milk in a pan, then gently whisking sweetness and rich chocolate and then deciding what to do next. This time, I added even more chocolate, then added orange zest. Good, good plan. To sweeten, I used coconut sugar (just dried coconut sweetness.) It adds a delicious depth and complexity to it. (And more nutrients and low on GI index!)

There used to be a drink at Starbucks called Mocha Valencia. Divine. But, too sweet and their mocha powder always tastes a little chalky. So basically, I think mine rocks and theirs doesn’t. Take that multi-billion dollar company!

Hot Chocolate L’Orange
Makes 2 servings

16 oz whole milk or milk of choice
3-4 tbsp coconut sugar
3-4 tbsp cocoa powder
Zest from 1 organic orange

Heat milk on low in a small saucepan, add 2 tbsp cocoa powder and 3 tbsp sugar, whisking or blending with an immersion blender. Add more sweetener and cocoa to taste.
Add zest, cover, turn off the heat and let steep on the milk for 5-10 minutes. Strain with individual or one large fine mesh strainer and serve steamy and warm.
Add a dash or cinnamon to have a cinnamon orange hot chocolate!

Add 1-2 oz espresso or 2-4 oz very strong coffee to make a mocha!
