I am extremely interested in the idea of making my own space. Making my curtains, food, toothpaste… you get the idea. And lately, the feeling has only intensified with the idea of my little one walking around the house putting everything in her mouth. One of the first places I remember reading about making you own cleaning products that are both non-toxic and affordable and smell much better than Windex was the following article.
Last fall Design Sponge started an amazing column highlighting Ashley English, an extraordinary woman who specializes in homesteading and is a DIY goddess. The following recipe is from one of the first articles she wrote on the site. The full article includes three affordable and natural/non-toxic cleaning products recipes. Follow this link for the full thing.
Spic & Span Floor Cleaner
- 1 c. white vinegar
- 1/4 c. baking soda
- 6–7 drops essential oil of choice (I like to customize my floor cleaner scents to compliment the seasons, using lavender in spring, something citrusy in summer, cinnamon in autumn and pine scents in winter).
1. Fill a bucket or your kitchen sink with hot water.
2. Add vinegar, baking soda and essential oils while filling.
3. Stir with a mop to disperse the baking soda in the water fully.
4. Mop floors per usual.
